Ten years ago, the average NAPA owner earned 3.31% Pre-tax profit. 2% to 2.5% after-tax profit. The Top 20% earned 4.8% pre-tax and an after-tax profit of 3.5%. Now the jobbers are earning an average of 5.97% pre-tax profit and 4.5% after-tax profit and the Top 25% are earning 8.28% pre-tax and 6% after tax profit.
The average core or defect credit was and still is $50.00. There are at least 25 ways to lose a core or defect credit.
We taught many NAPA jobbers how to catch and correct return credit mistakes. They must have listened and implemented our program because their profits and cash flow have improved.
At a 2.5% after-tax profit level, for every lost core or defect credit of $50.00, a store must sell $2,000.00 worth of products to break even. At 3.5%, it is $1,430 of product. At today's figures of 5.97% pre-tax profit and 4.5% after-tax profit, you must sell $1,111 of product to break even, and at 8.28% and 6% after-tax profit, you must sell $833.33 of product to break even.
AS YOU CAN SEE, IT IS VERY DIFFICULT, IF NOT IMPOSSIBLE, TO OUT-SELL INVENTORY LOSS. THIS IS ALL AT 100% PROFIT.
YOU WORK VERY HARD FOR YOUR MONEY, LET'S NOT WASTE IT.
I would encourage EVERY NAPA store owner in the U.S. and Canada to take the program Richard is suggesting and implement EVERYTHING. We work very hard in this business and need to stop the leaking of profit dollars.
